Stylist Tom Ford, father of porno-chic, greets the catwalks with a best of collection

An influential artistic director of Gucci and Saint Laurent in the late 1990s, from where he exploded the porn-chic aesthetic with his sidekick stylist Carine Roitfeld, the designer-turned-filmmaker is retiring from the runways now that he’s sold his label at the Estée group Laude.

Tom Ford is undeniably part of fashion history. He indelibly marked him as artistic director of Gucci (from 1994 to 2004) and Saint Laurent (from 1999 to 2004), before launching his own brand in 2005, then directing the films One man (2009) and Nocturnal animals (2016). Currently chair of the board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), the fashion designer-turned-director recently sold his label to the Estée Lauder Group for $2.8 billion in November 2022. So no wonder, though. we learn that he has just signed his latest collection, in the form of a tribute to his most beautiful creations.

Tom Ford has just revealed on April 26, 2023 his latest collection for the brand that bears his name. They’re actually reissues of some of her most iconic archival favorites (like the sculptural white cape dress Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 2012 Oscars).

For this latest Tom Ford by Tom Ford collection, we find star models like Amber Valetta, Joan Smalls or Karlie Kloss, photographed by Steven Klein, with Carine Roitfeld in the styling.

We see the models dancing and parading in a sort of shop window in front of which Tom Ford is standing, coordinating their movements like an orchestra conductor playing his latest work. A fashionable swan song.

The father of porn-chic retires: the end of an era for fashion

It is precisely with Carine Roitfeld (director of Vogue Paris from 2001 to 2011) that Tom Ford represented so much what we call the porn-chic aesthetic that reigned supreme in the 90s and 2000s (but which no longer passes, post – Me too). With the retirement of the most influential of American designers (clearly because he shone on European catwalks before gradually wilting once he returned to the US), it is therefore the end of an era for fashion.

But we are already wondering what the new era will look like for the house of Tom Fordnow that the brand belongs to the Estée Lauder group, which has all the interest put a new talent in charge of fashionto continue selling TF-branded perfume as (luxury) rolls.
