EXCLUSIVE: Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan (Promising young woman) will star and appear in historical fiction podcast series The Hydesville Foxeswhere also Mckenna Grace (The story of the maid), Phoebe Tonkin (Babylon) and Christina Brucato (the menu).
The nine-episode series was inspired by the true story of the Fox sisters, whose controversial alleged talent for speaking with the dead inadvertently helped create the religion of modern Spiritism.
The three sisters, originally from Rochester, New York, found success as mediums in the 19th century. The two younger sisters used “rap” to convince their older sister and others that they were communicating with spirits. Her older sister then took control of her and managed her careers. In 1888, after it succeeded, a sister admitted that her typing was a hoax and publicly demonstrated her method. Their reputations were ruined and in less than five years they were all dead.
The QCode and Criminal Content podcast was created by Shawn Christensen (Curfew) with ep’s launching later this spring. It doesn’t sound like it’s currently in development as a series or film, but the material sounds promising.
“It’s been quite a journey navigating Leah Fox as she grows from piano teacher to savvy and savvy businesswoman,” said Carey Mulligan. “I look forward to listeners hearing this compelling retelling of the Fox Sisters’ journey through sisterhood, spiritualism and deception.”
The series is developed and produced by Criminal Content. QCODE is executive producer and serves as distribution network. Individual executive producers include Carey Mulligan, Shawn Christensen and Gabriel Mason. Co-executive producers include Christina Brucato and Mara Kassin.
Producers include Brenden Hubbard and Adam Volerich. The series was written and directed by Shawn Christensen.
