Hello Insiders, Max Goldbart writes the weekly post here a day after Cannes unveiled its long-awaited lineup. Read on for all the details and more, and sign up for the International Insider here.

Cannes series is roaring

A few surprises: Zac Ntim reports here from Cannes…Thierry Frémaux, general agent of Cannes, announced Thursday morning 52 titles that will debut during the 76th edition of the festival, which will take place from May 16 to 27 on the French Riviera. There were few surprises in the official competition line-up, with festival favorites Wes Anderson, Ken Loach, Nanni Moretti and Hirokazu Kore-eda competing for the Palme d’Or alongside long-rumoured entries from Alice Rohrwacher, Jonathan Glazer and Aki Kaurismaki. However, the festival screened six films featuring competing women filmmakers, a new record for Cannes. However, with 19 game titles announced, six still remain well below the elusive 50% parity mark. Progress is slow. The Senegalese-French director Ramata-Toulaye She is part of this year’s historic year, and her debut film is participating in the competition. She is only the second black woman to enter a competition, after Mati Diop in 2019.

Headings: Other major titles include Steve McQueen’s documentary on World War II occupied city. The Small axe The filmmaker has been working for several years on the big-budget documentary, which was adapted from a book by writer and filmmaker Bianca Stigter (also McQueen’s wife). Next, as previously announced, is the out-of-competition component Indiana Joneswith Martin Scorsese Killer of the Flower Moon (Paramount/Apple) which, according to Frémaux, he would like to see in competition. An eyebrow turner is the idol from HBO and A24, the continuation of the series from director Sam Levinson euphoria. Show stars Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd, who will attend the festival, and Fremaux said the first two episodes will be shown “together like a movie”. His full interview with Mel can be read here.

Whose name did we not hear?: Names not heard during the official announcement of the group include Yorgos Lanthimos, Robin Campillo, Bruno Dumont, Bertrand Bonello, Michel Franco, Abderrahmane Sissako, Kitty Green and Cristi Puiu. All six were rumored to be up for grabs, but Frémaux noted that there would be additions to the official squad so some of them could still make it to the Croisette. Also notably absent were Woody Allen and Roman Polanski, whose inclusion would cause much controversy. “The Cannes Film Festival is an extraordinary springboard for films from around the world and of all genres,” concluded festival president Iris Knobloch in her opening speech when the festival program was announced. Andreas’ analysis on Friday morning had further thoughts and details. Roll on May.

Don’t forget Mip

The small screen: Before the film festival starts, next week there is the small affair of the Mip TV Konfab. On Sunday I go to Cannes for four days with some keynotes, meeting buyers and attending cocktail parties. poor me This year’s market seems to be a small affair, with many super indies and studios we spoke to deciding to send fewer delegations. The larger Mipcom conference, held in October, has huge booths staffed by dozens of employees in the same outfits, but Mip TV has faced stiff competition in recent years from Series Mania’s crowded scripted market, which just… is open for a few weeks.. takes place in Lille. However, several attendees said they are looking forward to the market’s first-ever Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV (FAST) Summit, which will focus exclusively on these growing platforms. Media veteran Evan Shapiro, ITV Studios’ Ruth Berry and See It Now Studios’ Susan Zirinsky led the keynote speeches. Whatever the size, it looks like a strong year for formulas at Mip thanks to the success of The traitors. Our market analysis included half a dozen format suppliers and manufacturers who said they were optimistic about the state of the industry agreement or no agreement Exec Glenn Hugill praised The traitors for “for formats what to do Top Gun: Maverick did for the summer blockbuster. We hear more traitor Space sales are on the horizon as sellers have high hopes for Red Arrow’s Stranded on Honeymoon Islandof Fremantle The piano and Banijay rights” hot tires Gameshow, all featured here in our Hot Ones feature. And if you fancy checking out our written Hot Ones, then look no further than here. I’ll be there next week reporting from Cannes.

Who needs HBO?

Remarket to the extreme: Well, there you have it: the highly anticipated megastreamer HBO Max/Discovery+ is named after none other than yours truly. Just kidding, but not about the Max platform that will go live in about a month. Many of our American peers tuned into the live stream hosted by David Zaslav on Wednesday as Zav unveiled its name, logo, three-tier pricing structure and some eye-catching projects, including the long-awaited Harry Potter TV series – EP by JK Rowling and running for ten years – and game of thrones forerunner A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms : The Hedge Knight. HBO boss Casey Bloys’ blunt deflection when pressed about Rowling’s controversial involvement in the new wizarding series is worth seeing. The new streamer comes armed with a powerhouse of a catalog that includes HBO originals, Warner Bros. films, the DC Universe and Discovery’s various brands. It will be fascinating to follow as it unfolds and subscribers won’t have to wait long as the launch date is set for May 23rd. In particular, our US team reports that little was said about the international rollout of SVoD, both during the presentation and during the Q&A. No mention was made of HBO’s high-profile licensing deal with Sky, which has blocked the launch of HBO Max in key European territories, with more expected in the coming weeks. The license agreement only expires in two years and in the meantime streamers around the world are working together, with this important collaboration between Apple TV+ and Canal+ in France and French-speaking countries worth checking out.

Indians ❤️ Content in English

Look through the roof: Insiders have long been raving about India’s streaming battlefield, and the fruits of our labor have been realized this week with a study showing a 124% increase in US and UK shows since 2020. During the pandemic, Indian streaming viewers like House of the Dragon, Lord of the Rings And The crown, according to the study by the rating agency Ormax. A surge in availability of Western programs has fueled additional consumption, with titles such as those from Netflix The crown And The gray man and Prime Videos The small team And The wheel of time It appeals to the subgroup called “lockdown millennials” in the survey. HBO’s home of the dragon was the biggest driver, but as we revealed earlier this year, the game of thrones Prequel has now been pulled by Disney+ Hotstar and is believed to be in preparation for the new Max service (see above). And Indian television is further rocked with the news that Comcast has invested in James Murdoch’s Bodhi Tree Systems, which in turn will become a key player in the revamped Viacom 18.

circumvent ban: A more controversial show that continues to garner attention in India is the BBC’s Narendra Modi documentary, which has been banned on YouTube and social media in the country. However, piracy is winning and my story from Tuesday showed that Indian viewers are finding ways to watch India: The Modi Question, Global analytics firm Parrot Analytics ranked it in the top 10 “global breakout” shows outside the US in the first week of March, along with big hits like Netflix in South Korea the glory. “Strong global demand suggests that Indian consumers have circumvented the ban,” says Parrot’s Wade Payson-Denney. The document still has a ripple effect. Just yesterday, India’s Financial Crimes Bureau launched an investigation into the BBC over alleged currency violations, less than two months after tax inspectors raided the publisher’s headquarters in India. The Indian government denies linking any of these cases to the doctor, but names him The modes problem “Anti-Indian shit.”

Diversity in Australia

Mysterious street

“Years of Advocacy”: According to Liz’s description of a Screen Australia study, the diversity landscape in Australian TV drama is slowly but surely improving. Angela Bates, the body’s First Nations chief, said it was “no coincidence” that the representation of Indigenous Australians on screen had increased from 4.8% to 7.2% over the past seven years, which she said on ” years of Advocacy and Consistent Commitment” return. work.” The figure of 7.2% easily beats the Australian indigenous population benchmark of 3.8% and follows the introduction of new programs such as Mysterious street (Photo), full control and sketch show Black humor. Elsewhere, however, further improvements are needed, for example in the representation of Australia’s disabled community, which lags far behind the population norm, as well as in the representation of LGBTQIA+, which has a long way to go. go deeper
