A trailer has been released for an indie coming-of-age drama titled War ponies, which tells the authentic Native American story of two Oglala Lakota men who come of age on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The film was directed by Riley Keough and Gina Gammell who both made their directorial debuts with the film.

The synopsis reads:
At 23, Bill (newcomer Jojo Bapteise Whiting) desperately wants to make something of himself. Whether it’s siphoning gas, delivering goods, or raising poodles, he’s determined to make his way to the “American Dream” somehow. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Matho (LaDainian Crazy Thunder) can’t wait to become a man. Desperate for the approval of his unhelpful young father, a series of destructive decisions turn Matho’s life upside down and he finds himself ill-prepared to face the harsh realities of the adult world.
The filmmakers worked closely with members of the Pine Ridge community “to shed light on the Native voice and portray the gritty realism of growing up on a reservation in modern America.” The film is described as a “powerful tale of life, hope and reservation membership”.
The film premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival last year and just screened at SXSW 2023. Picturehouse will release War Pony to select UK cinemas from 9 June 2023.
