Frank Skinner remembers “kind, gentle, funny, fascinating” former radio host Gareth Richards

British comedians are mourning the loss of Gareth Richards, the popular stand-up comedian and presenter, who died last month at the age of 41 after a car accident.

Richards was a regular on the British comedy scene with annual trips to the outskirts of Edinburgh, and was best known for his work with Frank Skinner. The couple hosted a show together on Absolute Radio for two years between 2009 and 2011.

Skinner’s show on Sunday was a tribute, which he poignantly introduced:

“There have been many nice reports about Gareth and his family have been very kind to us and kept us informed of the details of his fight, but look Gareth didn’t make it.

“Gareth didn’t make it and we’re going to miss him a lot.

“He was a very kind, gentle, funny, fascinating man and I can’t believe he…

“Tonight’s show has Gareth’s best bits but you can cry but you have to laugh too, I think he would have insisted.”

Richards’ wife Laura confirmed his death in a statement on Saturday: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Gareth passed away on Friday 7th April (Good Friday) at 6.30pm.

“He was in a terrible car accident at 11.30pm on Monday 27 March and suffered severe brain damage. It is a miracle that he made it to the hospital alive. Since then the doctors and nurses have been amazing and kept him in a stable and sedated state.

“However, the final scan showed the extent of the damage was so severe that they had to remove all supportive medication and put him to rest.”

She added: “The boys are doing well. The sadness is a lot to process right now. Thank you all for your support and kindness.”

British comedians posted tributes to Richards on social media over the weekend, announcing they would fill his established appearances with royalties going to Richard’s family.

The Guardian quotes Richards’ agent Geoff Whiting as announcing a fundraiser to be held in his memory later this year, in which a number of acts have already been confirmed to take part.
