Terrorist threats against transgender people by a children’s book illustrator led to his publisher dropping him and taking him to court.
Mitchell Thomas Watley, 47, reportedly posted notes to businesses in Juneau, Alaska, that placed an assault rifle over a transgender flag, ABC News reports. He filed a lawsuit on April 11 on a single count of terroristic threats over the note’s message: “Sweet feelings can shoot some kids.”
Watley worked on the children’s books with his wife, author Sarah Asper-Smith. They were published by Sasquatch Books, which is owned by Penguin Random House. Sasquatch said it would no longer sell her books.
The Watleys collaborated on three books, including I will deceive you And You are at my house.” The writing was aimed at children aged 1 to 5 years, with mothers feeding their young.
According to a statement in court documents, Watley cited the recent shooting in Nashville after his arrest.
“Officers spoke with Mitchell, who (essentially) stated that he was terrified of the recent trans school shooting and took it upon himself to print and distribute these flyers,” the indictment states.
Watley is free on $10,000 bail posted by his wife. She will not be prosecuted.
