Excessive ambition?

If you’ve come across a billboard in recent months, there’s no way you missed it. The Three Musketeers, it is this colossal project that has come to shake up the small world of French cinema. On the program: a budget of 72 million euros (On average, a French film costs 5sum that would suddenly seem almost negligible), 9 months of preparation, 8 months of shooting AND 300 professionals on set.

Add one last ingredient to this explosive cocktail, and not least: a dozen superstar French actors. The Three Musketeers: d’Artagnan can boast of bringing together – beware, take a deep breath to read the whole thing: François Civil, Romain Duris, Pio Marmai, Vincent Cassel, Louis Garrel, Vicky Krieps, Eva Green, Lyna Khoudri.

We had every reason to run away from this project calibrated to be a commercial giantwho seemed to have the only ambition amortize its costs as quickly as possiblea few weeks after the fiasco of Asterix and Obelix, he signed Guillaume Canet and his hundred stars in the cast.

However, it is clear that this period costume blockbuster is a refreshing entertainment with many qualities !

A clear and simple story to launch the diptych

First of all, it should be said that in the case of Three Musketeersthe millions spent on sets and costumes they weren’t thrown out of windows. Visually, the film is a marvel. Total immersion Middle Ages it is total thanks to an incredibly meticulous reconstruction work. From the first minutes we let ourselves be carried away by pleasure and curiosity 1627.

After all, if it’s easy to believe the world unfolding before our eyes, it’s because THE Three Musketeers enjoys a rigorous script and staging. The film succeeds in the (not easy) gamble of make us forget that we are in front of a French filmwithout looking like a Netflix production like there are in spades. Build your own identity.

Despite what the synopsis suggests, the plot is very simple, sometimes in excess. Often the characters are faced with obstacles that seem insurmountable, but which they overcome in the blink of an eye. However, this point is not a fault: participate in giving the show his good-natured, light and fun vibe. Sure, it’s not very believable, but basically we don’t care: what we want are fights, good jokes, scary villains and worthy characters.

The film advances with a common thread, which is its real stake : the bond that unites the musketeers. In this it avoids getting lost in too many secondary subplots that would end up losing the viewer. This readability of the story makes the film digestible and allows us to clearly pose the questions that will be at the center of the film second part of the diptych, The Three Musketeers: Miladywhich will be released at the end of the year.

The greatest quality of Les Trois Mousquetaires is its humour!

The relationship between the four heroes is precisely the point that represents the greatest achievement of the film: the quartet François Civil, Romain Duris, Pio Marmai and Vincent Cassel works better than we ever could have imagined.

Through beautifully choreographed and impressive fight scenes, the camera weaves an invisible bond between its protagonists, from which a rare connection emerges. The characters look at each other, talk to each other, are attentive to each other and in this they acquire real consistency.

We have a childlike pleasure in seeing four French actors very different, but all mythical in their own way in roles where he has never seen them. Everyone is involved and playing hard. Often very funny, dialogues participate in giving his style to each and finally, to make them more interesting and captivating for each other.

In addition to the quartet, we also have to dedicate a special mention to Louis Garrel, which it probably is the best character in the movie as he is as funny as a horned king, yet deeply likable, unable to realize what is happening right under his nose. The film takes one look at a time benevolent and full of second degree on character. And similar mix of genres and registers, that’s all that is asked of a great entertainment film!

Our biggest expectation for part two: the female characters

Despite all these fine qualities, this first part of the diptych has one of the most annoying flaws: its female charactersembodied by three great actresses: Lyna Khoudri, Vicky Krieps and Eva Green.

Faced with this first part of the diptych, one perceives how much the priority of the screenwriters has been, in the two hours imposed by the film format, to explore his musketeer quartet to the point of leaving aside women. Lyna Khoudri is forced to play the role of the lover around whom François Civil constantly revolves, in a game of teasing which falls completely flat.

As for Eva Green, she embodies the seen and seen stereotype of the femme fatale, using her charm to satisfy her lust for power. Hopefully, even if it means playing the cliche game, the film will do it thoroughly, and will offer a true villain character, deep, interesting. For the moment there is reason to hope, because everything leads us to believe itEva Green will be much more the center of attention in the second part as she carries the name of her character, Milady.

See you on December 13 to find out the answer to this question, and find out if The Three Musketeers: Milady will be, like its predecessor, best movie of the week!
