performance tonight marchThe Broadway musical revival, starring Ben Platt as Leo Frank and Micaela Diamond as wife Lucille Frank, was canceled 20 minutes after the scheduled 8pm curtain call due to technical problems with video projections.
Saturday night’s performance was one of many that critics were invited to before opening night on Thursday, March 16. The opening date is not expected to be affected by tonight’s cancellation.
Tomorrow the shows continue with the Sunday matinee.
The doors of the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater on W. 45th Street remained closed until just 15 minutes before the show’s scheduled time, giving ticket holders less than the usual 15 minutes to be seated. The house lights remained on until around 20:20, while a black and white video image of the street scene, seemingly frozen, was projected against the back wall of the stage.
The long awaited march Revival attracted a full house tonight, with standing room in the lobby just past the band seats.
The production, directed by Michael Arden, made national headlines last month when neo-Nazi pickets chanted anti-Semitic slogans at the line of ticket holders outside and the sympathetic portrayal of Leo Frank, the Jewish man wrongly convicted and later was killed by a mafia, protested. was lynched in the murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan in 1913. The protests drew criticism from the likes of Platt, various theater unions and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Written by Jason Robert Brown (music and lyrics) and Alfred Uhry (book), the musical opened in 1998 and won two Tony Awards.
