EXCLUSIVE: Raven Banner has acquired worldwide sales rights for Mongolian-language horror films deviationwhich will have its North American premiere at SXSW in the Midnighters section.
The film, Mongolian filmmaker Baatar Batsukh’s debut feature, had its world premiere at the Oldenburg International Film Festival, where it won the festival’s Audacity Award, an honor for an artistically groundbreaking film.
Filmed in Mongolia, deviation tells the story of a couple who rent a house deep in the forest to relax from their busy lives in the city. But her strange behavior makes a neighbor suspicious, and as he digs deeper, more questions and problems emerge.
Directed by Batsukh and written by Batsukh and Byambasuren Ganbat, the film stars Erkhembayar Ganbat, Selenge Chadraabal, Yalalt Namsrai, Oyundary Jamsranjav, Sukhee Ariunbyamba, Bayarsanaa Batchuluun and Badamtsetseg Batmunkh.
The film was produced by Three Flames Pictures in the US, with Trevor Doyle, Alexa Khan and Angarag Meguun serving as producers.
The worldwide sales deal was brokered by James Fler and Michael Paszt, managing partners of Raven Banner, with Doyle and Khan of Three Flames Pictures.
“Our goal is to bring Mongolian cinema to the world and we are excited to work with the Raven Banner team,” said Khan.
Raven Banner’s Paszt said, “Baatar Batsukh is an incredibly talented director/cinematographer and has delivered a visually stunning feature film debut.”
