Joe Biden had a small skin lesion removed from his chest that was biopsied to be cancerous.
Biden’s doctor, Kevin C. O’Connor, said in a statement that all the cancerous tissue was successfully removed.
“The area around the biopsy site was probably treated with electrosurgery and curettage at the time of the biopsy. No further treatment is necessary,” he says. The hearing took place on February 16 when Biden underwent his physical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
The doctor added that basal cell carcinoma lesions do not tend to spread or metastasize like some other types of skin cancer do. But they can get bigger, making them more difficult to remove during surgery.
“The biopsy site has healed well and the president will continue dermatologic surveillance as part of his ongoing comprehensive health care regimen,” O’Connor wrote.
First Lady Jill Biden underwent surgery in January to remove cancerous lesions on her breast and face.
