Writing about his ordeal in The Sunday Times earlier this week, British TV presenter Dan Walker said he “knew he could have died” when he was involved in a horrific cycling accident.
The Channel 5 presenter was hit by a car while cycling in the northern city of Sheffield and added that he has been eating and drinking through a straw since the accident. He was beaten and injured at the scene, but X-rays taken on his arrival at the hospital showed no broken bones.
Although he barely remembered the ordeal, Walker described how he lay on the ground struggling to breathe for 25 minutes after the crash – and thanked the driver of the car for looking after him until the ambulance arrived. When he arrived in the ambulance, Walker was told by medics that his bicycle helmet “probably saved my life.”
“I know I could have died, but I also know how easy it is to make a mistake, even when you’re trying to be careful,” he wrote in the article.
Walker was a football presenter and star of the BBC’s breakfast TV show until the summer of 2022, when he was lured to commercial broadcaster Channel 5. He added in the article that he hopes to return to work once the swelling on his face goes down. .
