Shawn Mendes thinks about pulling the plug on tour to focus on mental health: ‘The process was very difficult’

Shawn Mendes made the decision to cancel his Wonder tour last year to focus on his mental health. The “Señorita” singer now reflects on what went through his mind at the time.

“The process was very difficult. A lot of therapy, a lot of trying to understand how I felt and what made me feel that way,” he shared The Wall Street Journal. “And then do the work to help myself and heal myself. And also rely on people in my life to help a little.”

Mendes continued, “It’s been a lot of work, but I think the last year and a half has been the most amazing and growing and beautiful and just healing of my life. I’m also very grateful for all the people who are so open and loving, kind and was understanding. And it really showed me how the culture is really getting to a point where mental health is really becoming a priority.”

The singer-songwriter says he’s watching the show now normal people, based on the novel by Sally Rooney. He also said he started reading On The Road, but was only “halfway through.”

In July 2022, Mendes issued a statement that he was canceling his tour to focus on himself.

“I have had to reschedule shows over the past few weeks as I was not fully prepared for the toll the weather would take on the road,” the statement read. “I started this tour excited to finally be able to play live again after a long hiatus due to the pandemic, but the reality is that I was completely unprepared for how difficult touring was going to be after this time. After talking more with my team and working with an incredible group of healthcare professionals, I became more aware that I needed to take the time I personally never took to ground myself and come back stronger. Unfortunately, I have to cancel the rest of the tour dates.”
