Years have passed since the days of Marvel Agents of SHIELD has concluded its seven-season run, but one debate refuses to die… is it canon in the MCU or not?
I’m not sure why fans are still debating where the series fits in the Marvel timeline, but Clark Greggthe man who brought Agent Phil Coulson to life just offered the most direct answer yet, he didn’t hold back.
During a recent appearance at New York Comic Con (via /Film), Gregg was asked about the never-ending canon conversation and made his feelings clear:
“There [are] some people talking about canon. You can go fuck yourself. We are proud of what we have done. We are proud, truly deeply proud, of the connection we have with people like you who come to visit us and stay with us.”
Gregg’s response captures how true the cast and crew still are to what they accomplished with the show, regardless of how Marvel Studios and some fans classify it.
When Agents of SHIELD first debuted on ABC, it was designed to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe onto television, directly following the events of The Avengers. The show took over after that Captain America: The Winter Soldierwhen Hydra’s infiltration of SHIELD reshaped everything. But as Marvel Studios has evolved, the show has slowly moved away from the so-called “Sacred Timeline.”
Behind the scenes, that division stemmed from a power struggle between Kevin Feige to Marvel Studios and Ike Perlmutter, former head of Marvel Entertainment. Feige reportedly never wanted such TV shows Agents of SHIELD OR Agent Carter interfere with his big screen plans.
Once Feige took full creative control, Marvel Studios began producing its own Disney+ series directly tied into the main MCU continuity.
However, the issue of the fee has not disappeared. Fans continue to debate whether Coulson, Daisy Johnson (aka Quake), and Melinda May could reappear in the main MCU timeline. There are some contradictions, for example WandaVisionof Darkhold, but SHIELD offered an in-universe explanation that the book could shape-shift, leaving the door open for continuity to coexist.
Earlier this year, Brad WinderbaumHead of TV, Streaming and Animation at Marvel Studios, hinted that the studio has not ruled out fully integrating the ABC shows into the MCU.
“Well, I’ll tell you and I’ll tell you this way. It’s exciting for me to think about how to make those ABC shows square with the canon. That, to me, if you know me and you know the way my brain works, is fun territory to imagine.”
That comment gives fans hope that the Agents of SHIELD the team could finally return to the fold. Whether or not that happens, Gregg’s unapologetic attitude proves that, for him and the cast, Agents of SHIELD it doesn’t need Marvel’s official stamp to matter.
So, what do you think? Should Agents of SHIELD be officially considered canon in the MCU or should it remain a standalone corner of the Marvel universe?
