THE WITCHER creator reveals the moment he knew Liam Hemsworth was the perfect Geralt

The witcher Season 4 is coming with one of the biggest changes since the show first arrived on Netflix Liam Hemsworth taking over as Geralt of Rivia, later Henry Cavillthe departure.

It’s not an easy task to put yourself in the shoes of a character so defined by another actor, and there are many fans who are not happy about it, but according to The witcherthe creator and showrunner of Lauren Schmidt HissrichHemsworth’s arrival immediately proved that he was the right choice.

Hissrich told GamesRadar+:

“What I thought she brought to that character was this real emotional depth, this vulnerability and ability to fall in love, but also be part of this really scopic world.”

For Hissrich, casting wasn’t about finding someone to mimic Cavill’s performance, but rather someone who could bring something new and necessary to the next chapter of Geralt’s story.

Season 4 finds the White Wolf at his lowest point, physically beaten and emotionally destroyed following his defeat by Vilgefortz in the season 3 finale. Hissrich explained:

“We knew that Geralt will have a very different story this season than in previous seasons. When we find Geralt in season four, he’s at the lowest position he’s ever been in.

“He’s a broken man. He was beaten by Vilgefortz. He’s hurt. He’s hurting, not to mention, of course, losing his daughter. He doesn’t know where she is. He’s lost the love of his life, and he’s at his worst.”

That emotional depth was crucial for the creative team to find the right actor to accompany Geralt through this darker story arc.

“So we also knew that we wanted to find someone who was able to bring the rawness and the kind of action star that we know from Geralt, but who was able to bring this undercurrent of a man who has lost a lot of things.

“Liam does a beautiful job of walking that line of allowing him to be emotional without being weak; to be vulnerable, without being completely exposed all the time.”

Hissrich also admitted that Hemsworth’s physicality didn’t hurt, and laughingly said:

“Let’s be honest, this is Liam Hemsworth. You look at him and he looks like someone who can swing a sword.”

But it was Hemsworth’s first day on set that sealed the deal. His blend of raw emotion and commanding presence convinced everyone that Geralt’s cloak was in good hands.

“When day one came along and combined those two things, that sort of emotional character and this sort of massive physicality, we knew we had made the right choice.”

Fans have called Hemsworth the supermarket version of Cavill, but they’ll finally get to see Hemsworth’s take on the monster-hunting legend when The witcher The fourth season will debut on Netflix on October 30.
