Jeremy Allen White he is best known for playing leading roles in dramas Shameless, The Iron ClawAND The bear. This year he played two roles that required him to take his dramatic skills to another level and include some special voice work.
His biopic about Bruce Springsteen, Free me from nothingjust came out in theaters, and the Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu less than seven months to go.
While the first of these films is based on a real man that White intends to emulate, the second is only a blueprint of sorts. THE Star Wars the character Rotta the Hutt is the son of Jabba the Hutt, who had a notoriously low, gravely and monstrous tone of voice, so finding the right voice for his son was probably daunting.
But as it turns out, preparation for the role didn’t have to be as planned as White had initially thought.
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, White said he asked the film’s writer/director Jon Favreau if there was any voice work he needed to do, and said he tried out a few options for Rotta the Hutt’s voice, but was told his voice would probably be changed anyway.
She explained, “I was like, ‘What kind of voice work do you want me to do?’ and I was doing some things, but [Jon Favreau] he said ‘We’ll do it!'”
As much as that may have taken the air out of his sails from a challenge perspective, it probably also helped take some of the pressure off. White went on to say that he hadn’t seen much of the film yet, so he’s not sure how exactly his performance came out, but Favreau did so well with The Mandalorian so far, I bet this movie will be great too.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released on May 22, 2026.
