Telegram has overtaken Facebook Messenger* to become the most popular cloud messaging app in the last five years. This was announced by Pavel Durov on his Telegram channel.

True, the WhatsApp application has not yet managed to overtake. “Over the last five years, Telegram has become the most popular cloud messaging app, surpassing Facebook Messenger*. Telegram is now second only to WhatsApp and is closing the gap every year. No wonder our competitors are worried!” Durov wrote.

According to the latest analysis from Sensor Tower, Telegram became the most downloaded messenger in Europe between 2019 and 2022. It has become the most popular application in Russia, Turkey and France.
By the way, we wrote earlier that Telegram has surpassed WhatsApp for the first time in terms of traffic in Russia. Vedomosti reports that at the beginning of 2023, the share of Telegram user traffic was between 60 and 80% of the total among all messengers and continues to grow. However, WhatsApp still has more users – the app has an average daily audience of 76 million, while Telegram has only 48.8 million users.
