Yes, using a silk elastic is better for your hair and here’s why

It may not seem like it, but a simple elastic can have a big impact on hair health. Luckily, there is a still little-known alternative: the satin or silk scrunchie. What is more recommended? We explain.

Whether it’s straight, wavy, curly or textured, sometimes hair can show through some sign of weakness. We often associate breakage, loss of volume and frizz with the shampoos, treatments and heating appliances we use. What if this phenomenon is partly due to the way we attack them?

What is the impact of a classic rubber band on hair health?

The rubber bands are very practical to keep your hair firmly in place all day long. The problem, is that they are often too tight and their metal part (when they have any) breaks the hair fiber or weakens it. It is even worse when using a simple office rubber band (not covered with a layer of fabric). For what ? Because it tends grab certain threads and tear them out at the root… Because of running, the hair becomes less thick and the frizz starts to show up as soon as the humidity is felt.

Why is the silk scrunchie recommended?

Luckily there is a solution to avoid using the classic rubber bands and keep your hair healthy. Developed with a spring-like silicone base, these state-of-the-art scrunchies are covered in silk or satin. Very delicate on the hair fiber, they do not entangle the hair, leave no trace and above all they do not break the fiber, because they are very easy to remove.

What are the effects of silk and satin on hair?

Because it derives from a complex biological process (the silkworm secretes slime which forms a thread one or two kilometers long), silk is coated with amino acids and proteins. Properties that the hair can benefit from when it comes into contact with this high quality fabric. 3 times less absorbent than cottonsilk it does not promote dehydration and the hair slips on contact which prevents breakage due to friction.

Obviously it is not suitable for everyone as it derives from animal exploitation. However, satin, which comes from polyester, nylon, or microfiber fabric, can be a good alternative. The latter, soft as silk, prevents too aggressive friction and also reduces breakage. Enough to leave you with enough options to ditch your good old rubber band for good.
