happy valley attracted millions of viewers per EP and received critical acclaim as the third and final season with Sarah Lancashire and James Norton concludes this weekend.
Set in the northern English town of Hebden Bridge, the show has been praised for its down-to-earth portrayal of local life and no-nonsense approach to Lancashire, as Catherine Cawood stars alongside Norton’s troubled Tommy Lee Royce .
Wainwright defended the accusation that she only writes “strong women and weak men”.
“It annoys me as Catherine is a complicated character,” she added. “She’s complicated and not always personable.”
However, Norton’s villainous character, Royce, is “physically strong, but mentally weak,” she added.
Wainwright reflected on a whirlwind few years working on a show she never thought would take off.
“During the first season, Sarah said, ‘God, I hope people get it,’ but now it’s inconceivable that they wouldn’t,” she added. “I put the same effort into everything I do, but I never know how the audience will react until it’s there.”
