The on-air talent of Telemundo’s Los Angeles-based Spanish-language television network KVEA 52 voted overwhelmingly to merge with SAG-AFTRA, describing the vote as “another major organizational victory in Hispanic media.”
In a vote overseen by the National Labor Relations Board, the station’s hosts and reporters voted 18-to-1 to join the guild, which said its new members “see KNBC 4 in solidarity with their brothers and sisters .” for a fair contract. ” NBC Universal is the parent company of KVEA-TV and KNBC.
“SAG-AFTRA continues to organize Spanish-speaking media and entertainment professionals across the country,” said SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. “The overwhelming 18yes to 1no victory shows management that our newest members are serious about negotiating a union contract. This result underlines our union’s commitment to ensuring that all media and entertainment workers, regardless of the language in which they report or perform, are guaranteed fair wages and safe working conditions – and a strong voice in their workplace.”
Representatives of the organizing committee said, “We look forward to working with management to improve the working conditions for KVEA-TV’s exceptional talent, which is part of Los Angeles’ largest duopoly but does not have the same working conditions as our colleagues .”
