Austrian filmmaker Ulrich Seidl will debut a new combined version of his 2022 films Rimini and Sparti later this month at the Rotterdam Film Festival.
The new photo is captioned Wicked games Rimini Sparta and runs 205 minutes. A description of the photo on the Rotterdam festival’s website says the images from both films are “tightly interwoven”, creating a “ghostly bleak picture of a lost childhood as a state of mind”.
Rimini Premiere in Berlin 2022. Sparti was shown in Toronto, but was pulled after a report in the German magazine Der Spiegel raised concerns about the treatment of younger cast members during production. In response to the newspaper report, the Hamburg Film Festival also rejected plans to award the director the prestigious Douglas Sirk Prize. However, the film was still shown in San Sebastian.
Sparti follows a German struggling with his penchant for pedophilia and looking for a new start in the Romanian countryside, where he transforms a dilapidated school into a safe haven for local children. The production features Romanian child actors between the ages of 9 and 16.
According to the Spiegel research report, the parents of these actors were not made aware of the themes and content of the film during production.
Seidl denied that any impropriety occurred during filming and posted a statement on his website in response to the article.
“Inaccurate representations, rumors or events taken out of context on the set of SPARTA are combined to create a distorted picture that is in no way consistent with the facts,” he wrote.
Ulrich Seidl, Philippe Bober and Michel Merkt are producers of the new joint film. Co-production agency is for sale.
