NBC News and MSNBC saw a round of layoffs Thursday, though the impact appeared less severe than staff cuts at other media outlets.
According to one source, layoffs were in the double digits for a workforce of about 3,500. CNN reported the number was about 75. According to the source, the workforce reductions were spread across the divisions. It was expected that no on-air talent would be affected.
It follows the announcement of dozens of layoffs earlier this week at parent company NBCUniversal.
The layoffs come a day after an NBC News reorganization saw Noah Oppenheim step down as president and split his duties among three top executives, each reporting to NBCU News Group Chairman Cesar Conde. The network has added positions in areas such as streaming in recent years. Like other networks, NBC News is positioning itself for growth in this space as viewing habits change.
CNN went through a round of layoffs last month that affected hundreds of employees, while other outlets like NPR instituted a hiring freeze. A weakening of the advertising market meant that belts tightened in the industry, although some companies such as Warner Bros. Discovery is struggling with a huge debt burden.
