Prince Harry had a custom penis pillow made for a trip to Antarctica to protect him from a second dose of genital frostbite.
The Duke of Sussex, 38, was handed the device by a “friend” ahead of a 335km charity walk for wounded veterans across the continent in 2013.
His close friend, who has not been named, sent him the custom-made device after Harry revealed he had suffered penis freezing at a similar charity event in the Arctic in March 2011.
However, experts told MailOnline that a “specialised” device is not necessary for trips to the Arctic, provided a man is dressed appropriately for cold conditions.

The bizarre confession is just the latest in a series of shocking revelations buried in his new memoir, Spare.
Harry confessed to his previous injury which left the head of the organ extremely sore and painful as it healed, causing him great discomfort during William and Kate’s wedding in April that year.
In the extract from ‘Spare’, which goes on sale in the UK today, Harry said he was keen to avoid repeat injuries on his Antarctic trek and made sure he took extra precautions such as better underwear and extra padding.
But he added that a friend did his best to protect his manhood.
“Better yet, a very good friend hired a seamstress to make me a custom pillow,” he said.
“Square, supportive, it’s sewn from patches of the softest fleece and… Enough said.”
Harry did not explain how this good friend had obtained the necessary measurements to use this ‘custom’ item.
He also did not reveal whether he actually carried the thing during the arduous trek across the South Pole.
During the trip, the Duke of Sussex endured freezing temperatures of -45 °C (-49 °F) for around two weeks as part of a team of seven to reach the Geographic South Pole to raise money for military charities supporting veterans .
On a similar trip in 2011, this time to the North Pole, Harry suffered frostbite on his cheeks, ears and genitals, he claimed.
Frostbite can occur anywhere on the body, but extremities, including the ears, nose, hands and penis, are more susceptible to exposure.
The condition occurs when the skin is exposed to extreme temperatures below zero degrees Celsius.
Usually, the affected area feels cold and sore as blood is drawn from the area to protect internal body temperature.
If exposure to cold continues, the tingling may set in before the area eventually goes numb as the tissue freezes and damages it.
In extreme cases, the tissue can be lost, necessitating amputation.
In mild cases, the body heals the damage, but it can be very painful as the dead tissue sheds, becomes red and rough and sometimes takes up to six months to fully heal.
While Harry’s frozen ears and cheeks healed quickly, he said he was still suffering from his penile injuries from his brother’s wedding.
He also described it in his memoirs On the recommendation of a friend, he applied Elizabeth Arden cream – a favorite of the late Princess Diana – to his penis.
One of the most popular products in the beauty world, the brand’s Eight Hour Skin Protectant cream is known for its moisturizing properties.
It contains a blend of petroleum jelly and vitamin E that is said to soothe dry skin.
Harry also said he secretly visited a doctor in trendy Harley Street after he feared he might have to undergo a partial penectomy – removal of part of the penis.
But he was told he just needed time for his organ to heal.
Dr Richard Viney, a urological surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, told MailOnline that penile frostbite is rare but usually only occurs when a man urinates in freezing temperatures.

“It is possible for the penis to be affected, but this is quite rare because its central position usually makes it well protected and insulated,” he said.
“If it is taken off to pee, it is left exposed and wet and can cause frostbite.”
He also said that the “kiss” would not have been necessary if Harry had dressed appropriately for the circumstances.
“No special equipment should be required. All it takes is a few extra layers nearby.”
Dr. Viney said the best way to completely prevent a frozen penis is to dress warmly in cold environments and not remove the organ from that protection.
“Keeping warm is key to preventing frostbite.”
The NHS says there is an urgent need for people with frostbite, which typically include climbers, skiers and the homeless, to be moved to warmer environments.
Doctors usually heat the affected area with warm water to stop the damage.
The warming process is often painful and requires strong painkillers because warm blood surrounds frozen tissue and affects nerve signals.
The earliest stage – called frostnip – which the Duke of Sussex claimed to have had, is the easiest to treat.
