With the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran as president of DC Studios, the DC Universe has entered complete reconstruction with the aim of creating a cinematic universe never seen before in this franchise. While no one yet knows exactly where DC will go, Gunn continues to be active on social media to provide the public with an update every now and then.

The director of ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ already explained it in a statement the new DC Universe will consist of films, series, animated projects and even video games, but he hadn’t commented on the source material from which he drinks all of the above: comics. A user of the Mastodon social network has shown interest in this: “I know this is out of your control, but I hope we see better coordination with DC publications (comics) to have collections and reprints of characters that DC Studios will bring to the public.” Gunn, direct, replied: “I’m working on it with my friend Jim Lee.” This friend of Gunn is neither more nor less than one of the most important comic book writers and artists in DC history, as well as being the current president of DC Entertainment.
This does not mean that in DC comics and movies will be part of the same continuity, Rather, it seems that they will collaborate, in view of the premieres of films and series, in the publication of comics, whether they are new stories or reprints, on the characters of the moment in audiovisual format. It’s a great way to bring the DC Studios audience closer to cartoons, where does the universe they love so much come from.
Great strategy
Collaborations between cinema and comics are nothing new, if we leave behind the rivalries so popular on social media, we find the perfect example in competition. Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios have been practicing this strategy for years, which is very beneficial both for the comics industry, which gains customers, and for the fans, who know more about their favorite characters. Without going too far back, we find, among many others, the case of Moon Knight, who, when the Disney+ Marvel Comics series was released, published new stories about the character and reissues of the old ones. It’s not an isolated event, the same thing happened with ‘Scarlet Witch and Vision’ and with most of the Phase 4 projects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
If DC puts this plan into action, when a movie about a little-known character comes out, people want more from him will be able to find their stories for sale more easily than ever and thus learn about the comics that inspired the film adaptation.
