EXCLUSIVE: In October, Breaking Glass Pictures acquired Mario Martone’s nostalgiaItaly’s entry for the Best International Film Oscar for North America, and today we get our first look at the official trailer (see above).
The drama debuted in Cannes competition last May and will next screen at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Breaking Glass hits US theaters on January 20, 2023.
Based on the novel by Ermanno Rea, nostalgia Stars Pierfrancesco Favino (The traitor), who recently received a nomination for Best European Actor at the European Film Awards for his performance as Felice Lasco, a middle-aged Neapolitan who returns to his busy hometown after 40 years in Egypt. Back in town, Felice finds himself with a life full of loose ends as his criminal youth slowly catches up with him.
Martone was the director and co-writer of the film, which was also screened at festivals in Zurich, Rio de Janeiro and Stockholm. He won four Nastro d’Argento (Silver Ribbon) awards from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists, including Best Director, Screenplay, Lead Actor and Supporting Actor.
Favino will be joined by Francesco Di Leva, Tommaso Ragno, Aurora Quattrocchi and Sofia Essaidi.
In his review, Todd McCarthy of Deadline wrote nostalgia “Has the fantastic advantage of a realistic setting and a lack of clichéd old-fashioned conventions.”
