Director M. Night Shyamalan he recently sat down with Total Film on his upcoming horror film Knock on the booth.
The film is based on the book by Paul Tremblayand centers on a family vacationing in a cabin in the woods who are terrorized by four people who break in and are told that the apocalypse is coming and they must “make an unthinkable choice”.
The intense trailer that was released for the film hits really hard at the end as the family will be forced to make a terrible decision, and if they don’t make it… the world will end. Speaking about the trailer and why it escalates so quickly, Shyamalan explains:
“We’ve talked a lot, Universal and I, about whether to say at the end of the trailer what is the thing that they have to do. And we have come to the decision to say no, we just have to let everyone understand that this is not going to go Well!”
We have no idea what decision that is, but we do know that the film will deliver some major whiplash that audiences won’t see coming. The film features a familiar genre with the whole cabin in the woods, but the director is trying to turn it into something very different. Speaking of gender bending, Shyamalan said:
“I’m drawn to things that take genres and bend them in new ways, or change genres from what you thought you were looking at. The architectural twist is part of the fun. And since I’m transforming genres, I have to move into more intense genres. If you lower the cadence, even if you do it really well, you have a certain stake-reducing quality that the audience perceives.”

Universal will release Knock on the booth in theaters February 3, 2023.
