Fans wanted to see Donald Glove get his chance in a Spider-Man movie for years! Well, he’s finally getting it… sort of. Glover will star in and produce the film for Sony Pictures and will be based on the dark Spider-Man villain, Hypno-Hustler.
The character was created by Bill Capethe writer who also created Rocket Racoon, and artist Frank Springer. The character is described as “a black jive-talking soulful disco singer who uses his glasses and evil boots of death to hypnotize music lovers, along with his backing band, The Mercy Killers.”
Hypno-Hustler first appeared in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #1. 24 in 1978. His real name is Antoine Delsoin, and he “used music to hypnotize people at concerts into giving them money and valuables. He used a mix tape in a boom box to play the music, along with his guitar.
Antoine lived on the street until he was taken in by a club owner. Eventually, Antoine met three women who could amplify his hypnotic powers by singing. He hypnotized them into joining him and called them the Mercy Killers.
Hypno-Hustler is considered one of Spider-Man’s worst villains, so it’s funny that he’s about to get his own movie! But Glover is a talented guy and I think he has some funny plans for this disco Spider-Man villain! I hope it’s a period piece set in the 70’s.
The film was written by Miles Murphyson of actor and comedian Eddie Murphy.
