Tom Cruise told Glen Powell to “lean into the baggage of everything” for TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Glen Powell he sure came off as some kind of jerk Top Gun: nonconformist, but that was the whole point of his character! You had to have a character with that cocky attitude. I thought there were aspects of the character that were actually very Maverick in the original film!

When Powell was figuring out his performance in the film, he didn’t want to sound like a stereotypical villain who was completely unreliable. So he reached out Tom Cruise for some advice, and that advice included doing exactly what he didn’t want to do because that’s what the character had to be for it to work.

Cruise’s advice was really funny. Powell told Variety, “Sometimes you can fall into the trap of wanting to be liked by the camera. And in a movie like this, where you know there’s going to be a lot of eyes on it, you don’t want to be Draco Malfoy. But Tom gave me this advice. : “For the ending to work, you have to lean completely into that. Everyone else in the film questions their own abilities. You’re the only one who doesn’t question it. So if there’s any kind of excuse in anything you say, the movie doesn’t work. Lean on the baggage of it all.'”

I love that “lean into the baggage of everything” advice. In the end, it worked exactly as it should! I actually really liked Glen Powell’s character in the movie!
