As we reported yesterday, China had average traffic on Wednesday and Thursday, unfortunately in lower numbers due to Covid issues in the market. Not included in the above total is the 37.7 million RMB ($5.41 million) the previews clocked in there. The film continues to rule the pre-sale for the weekend, but as mentioned yesterday, we are taking a cautious stance.
Elsewhere, and not included in Wednesday’s total above, Korea added $2.6 million on Thursday for an outstanding balance of $5.8 million. Wednesday’s market had the second highest opening day for the month of December on record.
In terms of Wednesday viewing, the Disney/20th Century Studios release was #1 in all markets. In Europe, 3D and other premium formats accounted for 71% of the box office, Asia Pacific 39% and Latin America 55%.
France enjoyed the fourth-best opening day of the pandemic with $2.9 million and huge distractions from our win over Morocco in the World Cup semifinals.

LAST WEDNESDAY: James Camerons Avatar: The Way of Water today launched its international box office launch in majors like Korea, France, Germany and Italy – and with early sneak peeks into China. One of the most anticipated films of recent years dominates the game.
Some individual opening day market returns will come tomorrow, but for now we can report on that Korea opens to $3.24 million including midnight and has a market share of 85%. It is lower than compositions Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Infinite War which also debuted on a Wednesday. However, as we noted, the three-hour-plus running time makes this appointment a must-see for some – today was a business day in the market. The Naver score is 9.48, which is higher than both compositions above.
in the China, The path of the water was scheduled for 19:00 local time today for 3,000 impressions, but according to our information ended up with only 1,688 impressions. This is a result of the ongoing Covid issues in the market, where 73% of cinemas are open, and there is a trust issue amid the government’s care over its zero Covid policy. The resulting sneaks were worth RMB 20 million (US$2.9 million) before the official opening on Friday. We wrote yesterday that $100 million is possible this opening weekend in China; now we are taking a more cautious stance, although there is a glimmer of hope. Douban and Maoyan’s critical and social findings have not yet been published.
Elsewhere, The path of the water was top in his afternoon shows France today, which equates to 79,000 shots from 1,210 screens for $728,000. The songs did particularly well for dubbed versions, suggesting hints. France has a big distraction today as we face Morocco in the World Cup semi-finals tonight and as we wrote yesterday, this is likely to affect later performances. (Anecdotally, four hours before the game, the parking lot of my local giant grocery store made it impossible to get a seat, as my entire area came down to stock up for the semifinals.)
Elsewhere in Asia, we are hearing encouraging early signs from the Philippines and Thailand.
There’s plenty more to come in this Disney/20th Century Studios sequel, notably Australia, Brazil and Mexico on Thursday before the UK, Spain and Japan on Friday – we’ll be following all weekend.
