James Cameron fans have been waiting a long time for the 4K UltraHD release of his classic 1989 sci-fi film The abyss. Well, looks like it’s coming soon!
Journalist Arthur Cios recently reported that during an interview with Cameron on Avatar: The Way of Water, The abyss about 4K came up during the conversation, and Cameron told him that he “had a new master and would be out by March 2023 at the latest.”
The film tells the story of an American nuclear submarine crew who encounter an alien species, who coincidentally cause massive electrical and hydraulic malfunctions, causing the submarine to crash into an underwater reef and sink. The navy asks workers at a nearby underwater oil rig, joined by a number of Navy SEALs, to locate and investigate the cause of the crash. As the crew embarks on their mission, they encounter a variety of difficulties and discover they may not be alone. There’s something else down there.
This film pushed the boundaries of visual effects, which Cameron has done throughout his career. It will be really nice to see this film again in 4K and it would be great if it had a theatrical re-release as well!
Cameron teased the high-definition remaster last year by saying, “We finished the transfer and I wanted to do it myself because Mikael [Salomon] he did such a beautiful job with the cinematography of that movie. It’s really, really wonderful cinematography. That was before I started establishing myself in terms of lighting and asking the cinematographer to do certain things. I composed with the camera and chose the lenses, but I left him with the lighting. He did an amazing job on that film which I appreciate better now than when we were making it.”
He continued, “I’d also like to point out that he took one look at the dive enlightenment day one dailies and went out and learned how to dive. He came in the next Monday morning, world’s worst diver, but he reinvented enlightenment.” underwater. He went with indirect lighting and got everyone doing things that weren’t just out of their comfort zone, they hadn’t even thought about it. Suddenly underwater shooting starts to measure up to surface photography.” .
Stay tuned for more details on the release of The abyss in 4K.
