James Cameron Says His AVATAR VFX Technology Beats Marvel’s Thanos, Saying “Give Me A Break… It’s Not Even Close”

Oscar-winning director James Cameron he takes great pride in the technology he has developed to make the box-office hits he creates. He did it for Titanicand pushed the boundaries of visual effects to the limit in his own Avatars movie. Now he’s even going so far as to brag about how much better his visual effects are than what Marvel used in their bigger movies, Avengers: Infinity War And Avengers: Finalewhen they created the evil Thanos.

Cameron recently sat down with ComicBook and discussed the effects of the MCU versus his own, saying:

“Obviously the big comic book movies have driven the sheer volume of the industry… the rising tide of technique brings everyone together. It offers you higher quality artists, more instruments, plug-ins and code [to use]. You have more talented people coding out there.

“Our team at WETA Digital is constantly having new hires and falling out of that pool,” Cameron continued. “So it makes everything better. That said, WETA Effects, as it’s called now, is the best. Right? Industrial Light & Magic does a great job, but when it comes to the kind of emotional facial stuff we’re doing… Thanos? Come on. Give me a break. You saw [‘Avatar: The Way of Water’]. It’s not even close. That’s what WETA did.

He had started the interview saying he wasn’t going to insult Marvel or DC, but that mood clearly didn’t last. Cameron has historically been tough on the comic book movie genre and obviously believes he does a superior job. But I think the superhero movie numbers speak for themselves, and while his technology is undeniably incredible, I’m still skeptical that this sequel will deliver the numbers that will keep the franchise afloat.

What do you think? Want Avatar: The Way of Water hit off the ballpark at the box office? We’ll see when it comes out on December 16, 2022.
