Few characters are as influential in modern popular culture as Shrek, which is to say that the green ogre has been featured in four blockbuster animated films, as well as hundreds of memes and references to his franchise over the years. Now, actor Antonio Banderas has indicated that the fifth installment is a reality, after a long period of rumors.
In an interview for Red Sea Film Festival’s Deadline, Antonio Banderas confirmed the existence of ‘Shrek 5’, the long-awaited fifth installment that has been waiting for many years. The act is currently about to start promoting ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, the second spin-off of the saga, of which the latest rumors mention that the ogre may have a cameo in the plot.
With a long history at the feet of Puss in Boots, Antonio Banderas has talked about the return of Shrek: “I’ve been with this cat for almost 20 years. The first time I did Puss in Boots was on Broadway, so that’s where I did my first takes. Now I have done five films. There will probably be another one and Shrek will probably be back,” the actor said.
For the uninitiated, ‘Shrek 5’ has been planned since 2017, but it was not easy for DreamWorks to finish the production, as several plans intervened with its realization. The company recently revealed its new logo, which features Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, and rumors of the ogre’s return from Far, Far Away have resurfaced.

‘Shrek 5’ is closer than previously thought
Originally, DreamWorks planned to release “Shrek 5” in 2019, according to Deadline. Therefore, if a fifth film in the animated franchise is possible, a tape premiere would, at the very least, be scheduled to be released in theaters for the year 2014, or perhaps 2025, taking into account that the average of a production is perhaps two years.
‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ will be released on December 21st worldwide, and while there’s still no official announcement from DreamWorks, as long as they don’t deny the information, it looks like ‘Shrek 5’ is a reality, according to the words of Antonio Banderas, and it could come sooner than many believed.
After “Shrek 2,” Dream Works hasn’t had the impact they thought with future sequels to the ogre, so if possible, the animated franchise will have to recover the spirit of the first films, if it plans to revive Shrek 2. the saga for many more years.
