The Woman King director Gina Prince-Bythewood on epic challenges during Covid and why she doesn’t make sequels, including The Old Guard – Behind the Lens

With a diverse filmography that includes such notable films as Love and Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees, Beyond the Lights, and the old guard, Director Gina Prince-Bythewood made her most critically acclaimed and audience-friendly film to date with the critically acclaimed Academy Awards The queen of women. It is an epic story of the Agojie, the all-female group of warriors tasked with protecting the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century. Starring Viola Davis, it landed as one of the coveted AFI Top 10 films of the year today.

It was an extremely challenging shoot for Prince-Bythewood, who was put on hold for four months by Covid but eventually resumed filming, including these massive fights. She’ll tell you all about it when she joins me this week on my episode of my Deadline video series Behind the lens. We also talk about why she didn’t return to direct the sequel to her hit Netflix action film The Old Guard. Her answer might surprise you, but it fits right in with her career – always looking for a different challenge.
