‘Black Adam’ would lose millions of dollars after its theatrical run, although it led the box office

Released on October 21, ‘Black Adam’ led the box office for several weeks, both in the United States and in Spain. However, despite being Dwayne Johnson’s best starring debut, the film appears to be a long way from turning a profit with its big screen release, facing losses.

In the seven weeks it was on the bill, ‘Black Adam’ only collected 387 million worldwide. While it may seem like a large number, it’s a flop compared to the $600 million that according to experts interviewed by Variety it needed to collect at the box office. These same people estimate that the film would not even reach 400 million, although for the Warner Bros. studio, that figure would already be the point at which they would start generating profits.

According to the outlet, the film cost $195 million to produce. Furthermore, it has suffered cuts from the beginning: a production of that caliber would require about 100 million of marketing, but COVID box office constraints prompted the studio to cut the global ad campaign to $80 million. This may be one of the factors that caused ‘Black Adam’ to fail to attract audiences to cinemas that weren’t already fans of the comics.

Luckily for ‘Black Adam’, the collection at the box office is no longer everything and many films don’t make a profit in theaters. We will have to see how the film performs in the rental and streaming format, as well as the final data once the sales and merchandising benefits are added.
