The expected Marilyn Monroe biopic It proved to be a hit with audiences, but critics flatly rejected it, which he directed Andrew Dominic He found it gratifying, as he made some controversial statements at the Red Sea Festival in Saudi Arabia, clarifying that film pundits were wrong with their negative comments.
“There’s a long history that directors’ dream projects are bad movies; critics in the US would say that about Blonde. But they’re wrong!” said the director of this popular Netflix original film which had his debut last September 16, 2022, where the Cuban actress Ana de Armas he made headlines for his role.
Andrew Dominik explains that “I was hoping for a critical success and for nobody to see the film; “Blonde” was the exact opposite. In America they hated the film. They were angry, outraged by the film, but a lot of people saw it. I was a little surprised” by the reception that the film with Ana de Armas had Netflix.

On its release dates, both in select theaters and in the Netflix catalog, “blonde’ received negative reviews from specialists, causing outrage at the way the life of the iconic Marilyn Monroe is told, something the director explains that ‘we live in an age where it is important to present women as emancipated, and they want to reinvent Marilyn Monroe as an empowered woman. That’s what they want to see, and if it’s not shown to them, it annoys them.”
I am very happy that it has outraged so many people,” confessed Andrew Dominik.
However, the director explains that “that’s the idea of the film. It’s about taking the iconography of your life and putting it in service of something else, it’s about taking things that are familiar to you and turning their meaning upside down. But that’s what they don’t want to see,” concludes Dominik, regarding the criticism this controversial film has received on Netflix.
Before Ana de Armas, there was another actress for ‘Blonde’
The work of acclaimed actress Ana de Armas was acclaimed by both audiences and critics, however ‘Blonde’ was originally supposed to be performed by another actress but the situations were not convenient for it and eventually the famous performer was chosen of ‘Ballerina’, the awaited spin-off of the movie ‘John Wick’.
Of the actresses Andrew Dominik planned to cast to star in the Netflix film ‘Blonde’, Naomi Watts was one of the favorites to win the lead role, and they even had costume fittings in Marilyn Monroe’s iconic white dress but at the same time eventually it didn’t work out and the actress ended up playing Princess Diana in another biopic.
