A video has been released showing Russian troops poaching geese from a farm in Ukraine in preparation for a festival – before Kiev’s troops deluge their position with artillery fire.

The footage, shot in the Donetsk region, begins with one of three Russian soldiers shooting a goose while another is already seen with a dead bird at his feet.

The soldiers are then seen returning to a civilian building they appear to be occupying, with the dead animals slung over their shoulders.

A military vehicle believed to be carrying the local Russian commander then approaches the house from a nearby road.

While the Russians are inside, presumably waiting for a celebratory treat, the buildings in the area are shelled by Ukrainian artillery and are engulfed in a cloud of smoke by the end of the footage.

“The hunters became the prey: the border guards taught the occupiers who ‘hunted’ the goose,” Ukraine’s state border guard said in a statement.

“In the Donetsk region, in one of the occupied villages, the border guards with the help of a UAV spotted the intruders who were ‘hunting’ the civilians’ poultry,” the statement said.

“The looters shot the goose and carried it to one of the houses where they set up their command and observation post.

“The border guards reported the coordinates of the enemy to their fellow artillerymen, who later fired at the object with rapier guns and together with their unit commander, who also came for treatment, destroyed the intruders.”

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 in what the Kremlin continues to call a “military special operation”. Today is the 285th day of the war.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that between February 24 and December 5, Russia lost about 91,690 soldiers.

Russia has claimed the number of casualties is much lower, but rarely gives updates on the latest figures.

Avril Haines, the US intelligence director, said Russian President Vladimir Putin is now “better informed” about the challenges his military is facing in Ukraine.

It was previously noted that Putin was protected by his inner circle from the worst news of his troops’ performance in Ukraine.

Haines said Putin is becoming “more aware of the challenges facing the military”.

Haines also said there would likely be a “slower pace” of fighting in the winter, adding: “Most of the fighting at the moment around Bakhmut and Donetsk Oblast has coincided with Russia’s withdrawal from western Kherson Oblast which slowed to the east.on the river.
