Who would have thought that the good-natured Stan Lee had such ‘fits’ of categoricality?
Early on in the creation of the Vision character, there was notable controversy surrounding the character’s appearance in the comics. One of the main writers of the Marvel publishing house, Roy Thomas, said that Stan Lee, fascinated by the idea of a new hero, reacted sharply negatively to the choice of red for the synthetic android. As Thomas recalled, Stan Lee stated:
“Why did you choose red? Red is not the best color!”
Thomas had a different opinion and decided that the vibrant hue would distinguish the hero from others, since the traditional colors of superheroes were already taken. Despite Stan Lee’s misgivings, it was precisely this color scheme that later became a recognizable hallmark of Vision, both on the pages of comic books and in their film adaptations.
Vision was introduced to readers in 1968, in issue #57 of the Avengers series. Roy Thomas not only created the character, but also made significant contributions to the formation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, working with iconic figures such as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Many characters he created or developed retain their influence today – from Ultron to Captain Marvel.
In particular, the artificial intelligence Ultron was developed by Thomas and became one of the main villains in both the comics and the film adaptations. Under his leadership and co-authorship, heroes such as the Iron Fist also appeared, and Valkyrie, Red Guardian, Hela and Odin received their own interpretation.
The recent cast announcement for Avengers: Judgment Day did not include Vision’s Paul Bettany. This gave rise to discussions about the further development of the character, as Vision’s absence from the large number of popular heroes could become an opportunity for a separate storyline.
A separate series for fans of the cinematic universe will soon start, in which Vision will be the main character. The story will deal with issues of artificial intelligence and self-identity, and is rumored to feature Ultron in human form, whose role will be reprized by James Spader.
