Deadline writes that “The Sopranos” creator David Chase is returning to a dark chapter in CIA history with “Project: MKUltra,” a series in development at HBO.
The project, which will be Chase’s first series since the groundbreaking HBO crime drama, will be based on the nonfiction book Project Mind Control: Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA and the MKUltra Tragedy by author John Lyle. Chase has acquired the film rights to the book and will write the screenplay for the adaptation, which will be produced through his company, Riverain Pictures, through an exclusive deal with HBO.
MKUltra is a dramatic thriller about the infamous chemist and spy Sidney Gottlieb, often referred to as the Black Magician. He directed the CIA’s MKUltra psychedelic program, which conducted dangerous and deadly mind control experiments on both volunteers and non-consenting individuals at the height of the Cold War. Gottlieb is also known as the unwitting godfather of the entire LSD counterculture.
The secret MKUltra program, run by the CIA in the 1950s and 1960s, was intended to counter the alleged advances of the USSR and China in brainwashing through the use of psychedelic drugs, hypnosis, and torture to extract confessions, often without the subjects’ knowledge or consent.
