James Gunn talks about returning to Marvel after ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ ends

James Gunn has combined his work for years in the two major superhero franchises: Marvel Studios and DC. He joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014 as director and co-writer of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and after the success of the film he continued his journey through this universe with the sequel and with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, in issues related to his characters… In 2018 he was fired by Marvel and Warner Bros. took the opportunity to sign him at DC, Gunn was in charge of “The Suicide Squad” and its spin-off, “The Peacemaker “. During this time he was re-hired by Marvel to take care of the third installment of Guardians, then began and continues to combine his work on both franchises. Until recently there was no problem, but a month ago it became official that Gunn is the new co-president of DC Studios and according to the latest news, this entails a 4-year exclusivity deal with DC, but could be extended. His new position at DC pretty much destroys the possibility of seeing him again at Marvel Studios once he’s done with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” however, Gunn has been vocal about it.

In an interview with ET, Gunn was asked if “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will be his last MCU film, to which the DC president replied: “At least for now. I mean, never say never. Who knows? But for now, yes.” Your new position will no doubt keep you busy and His statements seem to make it clear that in the short or medium term we will no longer see Gunn at the controls of a Marvel Studios project, but that “Never say never. Who knows?” opens, even in the slightest part, a door to see him in the future, however distant it may be. Gunn won the affection of Marvel fans in 2014 with the premiere of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, a film which in general terms was and is much loved by all MCU fans. In it, he introduced us to a group that didn’t have much fame or interest in comics and built them into a team that many people loved. According to Gunn in the same interview, ‘Vol. 3’ marks the end of the story of these Guardians as we know them.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which hits theaters May 5, 2023, will make us laugh and touch our hearts, as Gunn explains: “It has the fun you expect from Guardians, but in a way it’s also an incredibly serious story, where we tell the end of the story of the Guardians and the end of the story of Rocket and where he came from. We have to go back to tell the story.” On the Guardians’ adventure since his big screen debut he says: “I think deep down it was always emotional. The journey of the Guardians started with a little boy who watched his mother die in front of him and went off, you know, running somewhere else… I think a lot of us, from In different ways, we’ve escaped our childhood traumas and gone somewhere else. And that’s the heart of the Guardians story.”

Tomorrow arrives on Disney Plus the penultimate project of James Gunn at the MCU, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Happy Holidays Special’, a new adventure that will last about 40 minutes. In it we will see the whole group except for Gamora, who left the team after the events of “Avengers: Endgame”. Star Lord is depressed by his departure, so the rest of the crew will head to Earth with the aim of giving him a Christmas present that will cheer him up. The gift concerns, neither more nor less, the idol of Peter Quill, Kevin Bacon, who will be played by the actor himself. Getting this gift won’t be easy, plus it will make the Guardians of the Galaxy experience more of a surreal moment on our planet…

‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Happy Holidays’, directed and written by Gunn, will debut November 25 on Disney+.
