Imax CEO Richard Gelfond talks about the importance of the theatrical window and how he thinks some streaming services are now realizing it.
“The debate is over,” Gelfond said in an interview with Yahoo Finance Live. “The argument that you can skip a movie window and catch up via streaming is just not true. The cinema window is more important than ever to generate streaming revenue.
Gelfonds’ comments come as Disney’s revenue has lagged despite an increase in Disney+ subscribers. The CEO of Imax referred to the success Top Gun: Maverick Break records this summer and become Paramount’s biggest global giant.
“So $1.5 billion didn’t just hurt streaming revenue, it increased it,” Gelfond said, adding, “almost every streamer has now said they recognize the need for a theatrical release.”
