Guillermo del Toro shares awesome CGI test for his unmade movie AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS

As many of you already know, in 2006, Gullermo del Toro was working on developing a film adaptation of HP LovecraftNovella dated 1931 To the mountains of madness. Unfortunately, the movie was never made and it’s one of those movies that movie buffs wish they could have seen made!

The plan was to make it an R-rated movie, Tom Cruise was set to sta,re James Cameron he was on board as a producer. It told the story of a disastrous Antarctic expedition that encounters unspeakable horrors after discovering ancient ruins.

The project was pitched to several studios, but they all turned it down as nobody wanted to make a big-budget R-rated horror film. He was looking at about $200 million to make it happen, and if he didn’t get the right amount of money for it, he wasn’t going to make it.

Well, the director has now shared some CGI test footage for the film that gives us a glimpse of a terrifying moment from the film involving a monstrous creature. It’s pretty awesome and makes me wish del Toro had the opportunity to make this movie!

Del Toro captions the video: “All CGI tests for one rig – ILM [Industrial Light & Magic] for To the mountains of madness (a decade ago) never seen before. It features an explorer in the mountains who is attacked by a creepy tentacled monster.

The story is written in the first person by geologist William Dyer, a professor at Miskatonic University. He writes to reveal closely guarded secrets in the hopes of discouraging a planned and much-publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a group of Miskatonic University scholars, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins and a dangerous secret beyond a mountain range higher than the Himalayas. There he discovers ancient beings hiding beneath the surface of the world, several species of forgotten and intelligent beings, including the “Ancient Ones”.

Last year, Guillermo del Toro said he wanted to make his own To the mountains of madness movie on Netflix and shared his new vision saying:

“The problem with Mountains is that the script I co-wrote fifteen years ago isn’t the script I was going to do now, so I need to rewrite it. Not just to scale it in some way, but because I was trying to bridge the scale back then. it with elements that would make it pass through the machinery of the studio.”

He went on to say that if he could make the film on Netflix, he could “move to a much more esoteric, weirder, smaller version” and shared:

“You know, where do I go back to some of the scenes that have been left out. Some of the big sets I’ve designed, for example, I don’t like. Like, I’ve done this or that giant set before. I feel like going in a more strange.”

The director also talked about how crazy and creepy the ending of the story is, saying:

“I know the ending we have is one of the most intriguing, strange and creepy endings, for me. There are about four horror scenes that I love in the original script. So, you know, that would be my hope. I will definitely get a call every six months from part of Don Murphy saying “Are we doing this or what? Are you going to do it next or what?” and I’m like ‘I need to take the time to rewrite this.'”

I would have loved to see del Toro’s original vision for the film, but maybe one day he’ll actually get to adapt this crazy story. I hope he hasn’t given up, I’d love to see him finally make this film, which has been a passionate project for him.
