Guillermo del Toro reveals ‘Cabinet of Curiosities 2’ directors list – Agency (AFP)
This November, Guillermo del Toro released two of his most recent productions, the first being his adaptation of ‘Pinocchio’ and the second being ‘The Cabinet of Curiosities’ on Netflix. And while the anthology has gotten mixed reviews from horror fans, the Mexican director reveals he already has a roster of directors who could appear in season two.
In an interview for IndieWire, which will be fully revealed in the next few days, Guillermo del Toro has revealed he has a list of directors he wants ‘The cabinet of curiosities’, as well as talking about the importance of being a role model for new directors in the field of horror, which he wants to help through the Netflix anthology.
“The more you have an agency, the more you can support it. So I could support Jorge Gutiérrez with ‘Book of Life’ or Andy Muscetti with ‘Mama’, or Juan Antonio Bayona with ‘El Orfanato’,” said the Mexican director. “But with an anthology you can support eight filmmakers at once.” Some the directors Guillermo del Toro wants to work with are Jayro Bustamante, Issa López and Boots Riley.
These are some of the names that would have appeared in the first season, but for various reasons it was not possible. explains Guillermo del Toro: “I have a list. For example, let’s try to catch Jayro Bustamente before and couldn’t due to COVID. When you think of Mexican filmmakers, it is isaa lopez. She was going to direct one of the episodes when he got “True Detective” and couldn’t do it. Riley boots wrote and was going to direct an episode and got the green light for his own series. I could ruin the whole second season for you, but I won’t.”

The Mexican reveals that “Larry Fessenden is one hundred percent at the top of my list for a second list […] I’ve been in contact with him since then”. Although he is only indicated as producer of the Netflix series, del Toro does not close the door to directing some episodes of ‘The Cabinet of Curiosities’: “I would like to write the opening and closing stories of next season and leave the media to others”.
“What I do is curate the stories that didn’t get made and that might go well with the director. For example, “The Autopsy” was a revered story among horror readers, but it wasn’t widely known and was considered unsuitable. So I said, let’s adapt it,” concluded Guillermo del Toro in conversation with Eric Kohn, which will soon be available on the same site.
Guillermo del Toro is about to release ‘Pinocchio’ on Netflix which has been met with good reviews among those who have already watched it. On the other hand, although the Mexican is already working on the second season of “The Cabinet of Curiosities”, there is currently no imminent release date on the Netflix platform.
