Function support to Netflix The hand of Godhigh quality acting the new pope and a recent TV adaptation of an Italian play Be Pezzi Facili For the Italian state broadcaster Rai, Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino says he wants to get back in touch with films.
“For cinema, this is a moment of confusion. Watching good movies is not as easy as it was a few years ago. Because of the problems that the pandemic has brought us, this is a natural thing and it will take us a while to understand this reality,” said the Italian director.
Sorrentino spoke at a press conference at the Marrakech International Film Festival on Saturday, where he is present as the chairman of a star-studded jury that also includes Diane Kruger, Nadine Labaki, Vanessa Kirby, Justin Kurzel, Tahar Rahim and Laïla Marrakchi.
“The great thing about our work is that we can face new challenges. Now the challenge for me is to make a film for the cinema, for the big hall. Like years ago, the challenge for me was to do a TV series. Now that moment is over for me,” he said
“I would really like to make a film for the big theaters because there is a crisis in the theaters and I think it is our duty to make films for the theaters, to try to save the theaters, right on this one point where the platforms are a big hit,” he continued.
“We don’t need the platforms now. I’ve had good experiences with Netflix. I am not against the platforms, but it might help if we try to make films after the pandemic and the crisis. In many countries, including Italy, we are losing many cinemas.”
Sorrentino’s remarks in Marrakech echoed comments he made earlier this year during one of the debates on the future of cinema at the Cannes Film Festival, in which he said he would not make another film with Netflix.
Clarifying his comments at Cannes, Sorrentino said he had nothing against the platforms, but tried to say it was time for him to step behind the cinematic experience on the big screen as a director.
“I did not argue against the platforms. I can’t because my last film was shot with a platform and it was a great experience,” he said.
The Marrakech International Film Festival takes place from 11 to 19 November.
