The Lion King is known for its stunning animation, beautiful music, and iconic voices that have made it one of the most beloved Disney animated films of all time.
The film’s success led to huge marketing and a Broadway musical, with its stars forever associated with its popularity. One of these stars is available to talk about the process of making the film, but not everything he has to say about working for Disney is positive.
Jeremy Ironsknown for his work on stage and screen, having won an Oscar, a Tony Award, three Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes, he voiced the iconic villain in The Lion KingScar. In a recent interview, Irons spoke about his experience during and after the film, saying:
“I thought I would see a screen with a lion doing this, and I would have to try to make my mouth do this, what his mouth was doing,” Irons recalls that they had essentially created the character of Scar during that process. As a result, he had no idea what the villain would be like until he saw the premiere.
He went on to say that he was “really upset” watching the movie because of how “muscular and wonderful” the good lion Musafa looked compared to Scar, who had “mangy looking” with a “terrible tail and a terrible mane. That’s what they saw when they were [sketching me]?” he said, revealing his thoughts at the time. Later, he admitted that this was obviously not the case.
The actor went on to say that he was disheartened when he saw how happy the audience was when Scar was killed. Despite this, Irons still looks at the experience in a positive light and revealed that former Disney producer and CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg later told him that Scar was an “important part” of The Lion Kingsuccess.
This led Irons to believe he might have some sort of bonus coming. He recalled:
“Jeffrey Katzenberg called me at the house where I was staying in Italy and said: ‘The Lion King it’s a huge success and a lot of that is due to your character’ And I was very pleased and I was hoping to get something in the post as a thank you because I remember who he played Mrs. Doubtfire—Robin Williams.
“Exactly. Robin used to work for Disney. Now Disney doesn’t pay a lot of money. I mean, they don’t. And Robin called them and said, after Mrs. DoubtfireI made a fortune for your company and you paid me a small sum.
“And he got a Picasso in the mail,” Irons revealed. “I was hoping maybe Jeffrey would put sand in his pocket. But he didn’t. They were very happy with me anyway. But no, I didn’t get a Picasso.”
It’s kind of strange to know that Williams was paid with priceless paintings, but Hollywood is a crazy place. I’m happy to hear that Irons ended up thinking his performance was worth it, as he did a great job and fans will always identify that iconic voice with the character of Scar.
