There are hundreds of thousands of examples in the cinema of horror films that have become controversial for several reasons. Some of them banned for different reasons, others censored from all corners of the Earth. Now, we will look at those where the Vatican has been shocked by the dark revelations that have been made from within the Catholic Church.
The devil inside
The case of the horror film of “The Devil Inside” was advertised as “the film the Vatican doesn’t want you to see”. And while there was some publicity on that tape, the William Brent Bell story is about Maria Rossi, a woman who confessed in 1989 to killing three people with her bare hands. The case immediately became famous when she was believed to be involved in demonic possession. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
The rite
This example is one of the many reasons why the Vatican banned ‘The rite’, a film of terror with Anthony Hopkins and directed by Mikael Hafstrom. The story is about Michael Kovak, a seminarian who is attending exorcism courses at the Vatican, but even if he is a skeptic who wants to prove his opinion of him, what happens inside him completely changes him. Available on HBO Max.
The exorcist
And how it will not be what for many is one of them best horror movies of all time. William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist”, released in 1973, and starring Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn and Jason Miller, this film prompted the Vatican itself to ban it in some countries due to the depiction of exorcisms in Reagan’s scenes. Available on HBO Max.
Stigma
One of those few horror films that has been very popular with believers in religion is “Stigma,” a 1999 horror film directed by Rupert Wainright and starring Patricia Arquette and Gariel Byrne. The story follows Frankie, an atheist woman who suffers from rare injuries on her body, such as those that Jesus Christ suffered during his crucifixion. In addition, the Gnostic Gospels are mentioned, which are rejected by the Vatican. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
Exorcism in the Vatican
Mark Neveldine debuted in 2015, ‘Exorcism in the Vatican’, a horror film starring Olivia Taylor, Michael Peña, Djimon Hounsou, among others. In the story we meet Angela Holmes, a girl with a completely normal life, until one day, strange presences in her house cause several deaths. Paranormal experts believe the girl is possessed, and only in the Vatican is there a solution. Available on HBO Max.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Finally, one of the most popular on the list, ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’, a film directed by Scott Derrickson and starring, among others, Jennifer Carpenter, Laura Linney. The story is inspired by the case of Annaliese Michel, a young German woman who suffered from serious health problems that traditional medicine could not solve, until she underwent several sessions of exorcism.
