Sydney Sweety (Euphoria, The white lotus) will star in Sony Pictures’ new film adaptation of Barbarellawhich is Jean-Claude ForestThe French comic series that was made into the classic 1968 film starring Jane Fonda.
There are no writers or directors attached to the film, but the film is rumored to be in development and Sweeney will also executive produce.
Of course, there’s not much to share about this new adaptation, but the story is set in the 41st century and Earth president sends space adventurer Barbarella on a mission to retrieve a scientist. She crashes on a planet and explores her strange customs after a man rescued her from captivity. She must stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose positronic beam threatens to bring evil back to the galaxy.
I remember seeing the original movie for the first time when I was in high school and couldn’t believe the movie was rated PG! It is a highly sexual film. It will be interesting to see how this new adaptation turns out, but Sweeney looks like a great choice to star in the film.
