Hasbro’s eOne production company is developing a new documentary that will explore the popular tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons, and is billed as the definitive recovery. D&D fan and official ambassador Joe Manganiello will co-direct the document with Kyle Newman (1UP).
Dungeon & Dragon was created by Gary Gygax And Dave Arneson, and was first published by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. in 1974, and has been distributed by the Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast since 1997. The game, overseen by a player known as The Dungeon Master, sees others form a group of adventurers who will embark on missions through fantasy worlds in order to take their experience to the next level. More than 50 million fans interacted or played D&D – one of Hasbro’s key brands – since it was first released 48 years ago, including via video games and live streaming entertainment on Twitch and YouTube. “
The document will draw on “over 400 hours of archived and unedited footage dating back to the creation of the game in the early 1970s, on which Manganiello, Newman and Adam F. Goldberg have spent the last few years acquiring exclusive rights. The film, also featuring exclusive interviews with celebrity fans of the game, will benefit from Wizards of the Coast offering filmmakers internal access to highly confidential developments regarding the game and branding, this being the first time this level has been authorized. “
Head of eOne Global Television, Michele Lombardo stated in a statement: “I have had the pleasure of working with Joe in the past Real blood among other projects and I can’t think of a better and more passionate person to dive headlong into the world of Dungeons & Dragons both from the point of view of the player and the fan. The addition of Kyle Newman, Nick Manganiello and Jon Peterson also brings unique and multiple dimensions to the story we intend to document. As we approach 50 years of this incredible gaming universe, the time has come for an officially authorized account of the game’s origins and current state of the game to its avid fan based on all walks of life and its global cultural impact. “
Hasbro President of Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming, Cinzia Williams She said: “Dungeons & Dragons has ignited the imaginations of fans around the world for nearly 50 years and we continue to bring thrilling and engaging experiences to new generations. As we approach this celebration of this milestone, I am thrilled to have a creative team with genuine passion for the brand producing what we hope will become a defining glimpse into the legendary history of the world’s greatest RPG. “
Joe Manganiello added: “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to be back behind the camera for another documentary, this time with the D&D dream team of Jon, Kyle and my brother and production partner Nick. I have experienced the rise and fall and rebirth of this historic brand which not only meant so much to me but served as a source of creativity for an entire generation of writers, artists and creative minds, influencing our own so much. culture . None of this would have been possible without Nathan Stewart at Wizards of the Coast and my eternally supportive boss at HBO /Real blood days, Michael Lombardo and the fantastic eOne team ”.
This news comes as eOne and Paramount Pictures are producing theirs Dungeons & Dragons: honor among thieves film, which acts Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head, Hugh Grant And Jason Wong. That film will be released in theaters on March 3, 2023. The studio is also developing several other D&D-based films and TV projects.
The film will be released in 2024, as the game celebrates its 50th anniversary.
