“Dahmer” is Netflix’s highest number of plays since “Stranger Things” and no promo

Before September 21, hardly anyone had heard of ‘Dahmer’, the Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan miniseries based on the lurid true story of Jeffrey Dahmer, starring Evan Peters as the serial killer nicknamed the Milwaukee Butcher. The streaming platform hasn’t promoted the title beyond launching a trailer a few days after the premierebut even so, the series proved to be a huge hit with audiences, according to impressive data from its early days on the streamer.

“Monster: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer” it amassed an audience of 196.2 million viewers in its first week, according to Deadline, officially making it one of the biggest premieres of a series or miniseries in Netflix history. Only four series surpass it and the four are undisputed audience phenomena: ‘The Squid Game’, ‘We Are Dead’, the second season of ‘The Bridgertons’ and the most recent, ‘Stranger Things 4’. Compared to other recent miniseries, “Dahmer” surpassed (slightly, yes) the premiere of “Who is Anna?”, Which garnered 195.97 million admissions. Time will tell if this is another case like “Queen’s Gambit”.

We can’t exactly compare “Dahmer” audiences with Ryan Murphy’s previous Netflix series, “The Politician”, “Hollywood”, “Halston” or “Ratched”, as the company has changed the way it shares its data. , but everything seems to indicate that it would be a far greater success than all of them. The truth is, it seemed Netflix had thrown in the towel with him after the rather lukewarm reception of his original plans for the platform, which for many would explain why he didn’t promote ‘Dahmer’. However, his enormous success could mean a breakthrough in the relationship between the two, as well as give to reflect on the role of advertising in Netflix’s successes, which in this case is clearly not a deciding factor, since it was the public themselves, the networks and the press that took charge of the campaign that they did not dedicate to it. The attraction of real crime is indisputable.

Murphy for a while

The general consensus up until now was that the multi-million dollar deal between Ryan Murphy and Netflix may not have paid off as expected, however, the prolific creator of ‘American Horror Story’ just didn’t hit the brakes, and after ‘Dahmer ‘, he already has a good number of original projects underway for the platform. These include a biographical miniseries about Marlene Dietrich starring Jessica Lange, an adaptation, also in the form of a miniseries, of the Broadway musical “A Chorus Line” and the film “Mr. Harrigan’s Telephone”, based on the short story by Stephen King. is closer ‘Vigilante’, a new thriller starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale not to be missed, because it has every chance of becoming its next hit series when it premieres on Netflix on October 13.
