This year, the Conchiglia d’Oro at the San Sebastian Film Festival went to the film ‘The Kings of the World’ by Laura Mora, co-production between Colombia, Luxembourg, France, Mexico and Norway. The official jury, chaired by Matías Mosteirín (Glenn Close retired due to a family emergency) and also composed of Antoinette Boulat, Tea Lindeburg, Matías Mosteirín, the writer Rosa Montero, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese and Hlynur Pálmason, awarded this drama about a group of five friends from the streets of Medellin, five kings without a kingdom, without law or without family, who embark on a journey in search of the promised land. In Spain it will be distributed by BTeam Pictures, which has not yet announced a release date, but we can see the trailer thanks to one of its Colombian production companies, Ciudad Lunar Producciones.
‘The kings of the world’ starring newcomers Carlos Andrés Castañeda, Davison Florez, Brahian Acevedo, Cristian Campaña and Cristian David Duque and according to the official synopsis, Rá, Culebro, Sere, Winny and Nano, five boys between 12 and 19 years, they have in their hands some ancient writings of a land inherited from Rá; “After receiving a letter from the government land restitution office, notifying the return of the land that had been stolen from her grandmother, Rá will decide to embark on the journey with his friends with the promise of finally realizing a dream: to have a place in the world where you can be free, where to stay safe, where to build your own kingdom “. Curiously, it is the third consecutive year that the Golden Shell falls on a film directed by a woman, after ‘Beginning’ in 2020 by Dea Kulumbegashvili and ‘Crai Nou’ by Alina Grigore in 2021, but it is the first time that it is made by a Colombian production.

The film also won the Feroz Zinemaldia Award, although the winners of this 70th edition of the Festival were widely distributed. The audience honored the Santiago Miter thriller “Argentina, 1985”, starring Ricardo Darín and Peter Lanzani, which will be released in Spanish cinemas on Friday 30 September. The Spanish presence is named after Carla Quílez, winner of the Silver Shell for the best female interpretation for her work in “La maternal” by Pilar Palomero. Also noteworthy is the Silver Shell for Best Director which went to Genki Kawamura for ‘One Hundred Flowers’, her directorial debut.
