JA Bayona defends the casting of ‘The Rings of Power’: “I don’t give a damn about the criticisms of Tolkien’s purists”

Spanish director JA Bayona, who is currently filming “The Snow Society”, gave an interview for Jordi Basté’s radio show “El món a RAC1”. In her, the executive producer and director of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” defended the inclusive casting of the series that is causing so much talk.

“It makes no sense that there are people who cannot be recognized, Tolkien himself has always defended inclusion and left the tools to any other person to give their own vision and make Middle-earth bigger. There is a kind of racism and misogyny among Tolkien’s purists that I was not aware of. I don’t give a damn about criticism”Bayonne says.

Furthermore, the Barcelona director said that the initial plan for the series is a total of 5 seasons: “The entire Second Age of Tolkien revolves around an idea: to put an end to the forging of the rings and the appearance of the evil incarnated in Sauron, and this will happen over the span of 5 seasons”. At the same time, Bayona relativized the famous cost of the serieswhich is currently the most expensive in history: “I don’t know exactly how much the series cost, but it’s not too big a budget because you had to shoot 8 one-hour episodes.”.

Elon Musk harshly criticizes the series

Despite debuting with great numbers and great reviews, Elon Musk, creator of the Tesla group, did not hesitate to show his disappointment for the first two episodes through social media. Musk has a bitter rivalry with Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. Commercial rivals for years, it’s no surprise to see Musk’s criticism. Currently, their biggest showdown is taking place in the space travel industry, where Musk’s SpaceX and Bezos’s Blue Origin meet.

“Tolkien is turning in his grave”, wrote the American tycoon on his Twitter account, which has more than 105 million followers.” Almost all male characters so far are cowards, idiots or both. Only Galadriel is brave, intelligent and kind “.. The message provoked the response of a multitude of users on Twitter, among which Neil Gaiman stands out.

The author of ‘Sandman’ replied: “Elon Musk doesn’t come to me for advice on how not to buy Twitterand I don’t go to him for film, television or literature reviews “.
