Mexican suspense films are rarely mentioned among the best productions in the country. However, there are great titles in the genre that should get a little more recognition, due to their intriguing stories, mysterious characters, and scenes that will make you very nervous.
Museum
One of the best national directors of the moment is Alonso Ruizpalacios, who has had credits in series such as “Narcos” and “Outer Range”. But in 2018 it premiered one of the best Mexican suspense movies as it is ‘Museum’, with Gael García Bernal. The story follows a gang who rob the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. Between drama and terror, we have one of the most extraordinary Mexican films of recent years, as well as director Amat Escalante’s ‘The Wild Region’. The story follows a troubled couple who one day find a meteorite, which hides a mysterious creature. Available on Apple TV.
Shared time
The second film by acclaimed Mexican director Sebastián Hoffman e one of the best national thrillers is ‘Shared time’, with Luis Gerardo Méndez and Miguel Rodarte. The story is about two men joining forces to save their families, who they believe are planning something against them. Available on Netflix.
the freedom of the devil
For those who love a bit of history, without neglecting that it is one of the most terrifying and distressing plots, we have the documentary by Everardo González ‘La libertad del diablo’. The survey addresses one of the country’s most worrying issues, such as violence, from the eyes of victims and perpetrators. Available on Netflix.

In the spirit of the best stories of Guillermo del Toro or Stephen King, we have ‘Vuelven’, a horror and fantasy film by director Issa López. The story follows a little girl whose mother is missing and she expresses a desire to see her again, but her wish is fulfilled in the worst possible way. Available on Amazon Prime Video
Nameless
Finally, from the hand of a non-Mexican director, but with a co-production between Mexico and the United States, is ‘Sin Nombre’, directed by Cary Fukunaga, with Edgar Jones, Paulina Gaitán and Tenoch Huerta. The story follows a Honduran teenager who, along with a gang member, gets on a train to the United States in search of a better life. Available on Netflix.
